Task team to probe Mokonyane’s 'watergate scandal'

Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane has set up a task team to investigate allegations of corruption following claims she used her ANC influence in the so-called “watergate” scandal. She made the announcement in Pretoria on Wednesday, saying the team would be led by advocate Terry Motau. Mokonyane came under fire early this year after accusations of political interference in the Lesotho Highlands Water Project were made against her. In its case against her, the DA said she had a hand in the manipulation of processes of awarding of tenders to companies and individuals with connections to the ANC. It requested a probe by the public protector and called for Mokonyane's head. On Wednesday Mokonyane said: “(The task team) will report on its findings to the minister within a stipulated period of six months.” During that time, the team would review and evaluate information, she added.

The team’s terms of reference were instructions to review contracts concluded from June 1, 2014 to date. “It would also review contracts concluded before June 1, 2014 that are still running; and the task team will determine value for money on contracts concluded,” Mokonyane said. The team would check for compliance with the Public Finance Management Act and the supply chain management policies. “It will also assess the extent to which the department benefited the previously disadvantaged, youth, women and people with disabilities,” she said.
