Health Department fires 90 after corruption probe

More than 90 KwaZulu-Natal Health Department employees, including senior managers, have been axed after investigations of fraud and corruption. The department said it had dealt with 343 cases of fraud and corruption since 2009, when a dedicated anti-fraud unit had been formed. Briefing members of the legislature’s standing committee on public accounts (Scopa) on Tuesday, department officials said 91 employees had been fired since then. Nine of these were senior managers. “In light of the successful prosecutions, a strong message has been sent out and the outcomes have served as a deterrent,” the head of health, Sibongile Zungu, said.

Department officials attended the meeting without suspended chief financial officer Mashaka Ravhura, who – together with supply chain manager Andile Zondo – was suspended late last year after allegations of corruption. Dhlomo said Ravhura had now been charged internally. The charges against Ravhura related to irregularities in procurement and allegations that he lived in a hotel for about a year at a cost of R500 000 to the department. The department had been called to appear before Scopa to explain some of the issues which led to its receiving a qualified audit from the auditor-general last year.
