Union withdraws City Power tender case

Numsa's court bid to have City Power reveal documents that led to the awarding of a multi-million rand solar geyser tender has been put on hold, the union said on Monday. “The case has been temporarily withdrawn pending negotiations with the electricity utility in order to receive the information that the union requires,” National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) spokesman Castro Ngobese said. The matter would have been heard in the High Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday. Numsa took City Power to court after it awarded an R800 million tender to supply and install low-pressure solar water geysers to Tasol Solar Energy.

The union said it resorted to legal action after the utility ignored its request for access to documents relating to the tender process. It claimed the company was importing the geysers from China, when they could have been manufactured locally to support the local metal sector. The company has denied being awarded the tender, adding that its units were manufactured in Alberton.
