Several operators proposed for buses

The successful tenderers who will receive the lucrative contract to run the Durban Transport bus service are expected to be announced next month. A report tabled at the eThekwini municipality’s executive committee this week says the closing date for the submission of tenders was April 29, and the successful tenderers would be announced on May 30 and start operating on July 1. This is, however, subject to council’s approval of the eThekwini transport authority head Thami Manyathi’s proposal. Manyathi has listed four options that the city could adopt for the Durban transport system, and has recommended that the transport contract be awarded to multiple private contractors, with the city retaining ownership of the fleet. He said this would give the city “flexibility and control”.

The report said it was against the present national policy for the fleet to be owned and operated by the government. If the city had to decide on this option, it would have to pay higher employee costs of R99 million extra for Durban transport alone, and R892m extra for the entire metro area. The present operator, Tansnat Africa, was appointed in August 2009 to run a reduced service, after Remant Alton stopped operating in June that year.
