Public Works head axed for tender graft

Vusi Mashiane, head of property management in the national Department of Public Works, has been fired for pre-briefing an acquaintance about a R6.3 million accommodation tender in his department. A disciplinary hearing, presided over by advocate Gys Rautenbach, found last October that Mashiane had secured fully furnished accommodation for Cuban doctors working in state hospitals without following tender procedures. The hearing also found Mashiane had improperly influenced the department to award a multimillion-rand contract to property mogul Roux Shabangu.
