Power programme approved

Cabinet has approved the electricity distribution asset management turnaround programme and the start of the first phase of the programme. This includes developing a business plan for the project, standardised refurbishment, maintenance, and process recommendations, acting government spokeswoman Phumla Williams told media on Thursday, following Cabinet's regular fortnightly Wednesday meeting. “The programme will address the ageing electricity infrastructure, which forms the basis for the distribution of electricity to business and households,” she said. The programme would be implemented within the approved government structure and monitored by the Presidential Infrastructure Co-ordinating Council. Eskom would be the lead entity procuring on behalf of municipalities. This would ensure economies of scale in implementing the programme. Williams said the project's costing had yet to be finalised.
