Power: Local firms win Koeberg contract

A contract for the design, manufacture and installation of replacement reservoirs for the 1 800m2 refuelling water storage tanks at Eskom’s Koeberg nuclear power station has been awarded to a consortium comprising listed Group Five and Lesedi Nuclear Services. The contract value was not disclosed. It is scheduled for completion at the end of 2015. The tanks play a vital role in maintaining operational safety of the plant by providing borated cooling water to the reactor and fuel storage ponds. Koeberg senior manager for nuclear projects Sedick Davis said yesterday that Eskom was pleased to have South African suppliers qualify for the project.

Group Five nuclear construction services director Des Muller said the award was a step forward in its nuclear readiness strategy. Lesedi Nuclear Services chief executive Francis Carruthers said the contract was testament to the domestic industry’s ability to localise nuclear projects.
