Only a few benefit from tenders: Jansen

Government tenders and political friends can only help a few people to be successful, University of the Free State Rector Jonathan Jansen said on Thursday. “Not everybody... will be so lucky. Most will have to work to be successful,” Jansen told a Free State Youth Summit. “Apologies, premier,” Jansen told Free State premier Ace Magashule who was also attending the summit. “You will protect me under the circumstances.” Jansen said almost all the country's young people would have to work hard and undergo training or they would go nowhere. He said if the youth did not make peace with South Africa's past the country was “screwed”. “We must live past our demons,” he said.

If this could not be achieved, the country would always fall back on issues such as skin colour and language in a crisis situation. He said South Africa's future was not for angry people, but citizens who could look past aspects such as class, colour and disability. Jansen said more South Africans should learn Mandelian values (those of former president Nelson Mandela). “Also, surround yourself with people who tell you everyday you need education and training,” Jansen told delegates.
