No loos blues for beachfront ablutions

Storm surges have been identified as the cause of the damage to some of the ablution facilities at the Durban beachfront. But repairs – to coincide with the arrival of about 800 000 visitors for the winter school holidays – are under way. This number includes those flocking to the city for the Vodacom Durban July and for other events. City spokeswoman Tozi Mthethwa said the municipality was busy with supply-chain management requirements to proceed with an infrastructure repair programme, particularly on Dairy Beach, and to repair infrastructure such as the boardwalks and showers. “The areas which present an operational risk over the coming holidays will be cordoned-off to restrict access to beach users. Currently there is an overall beachfront landscaping contract which is responsible for the general maintenance of the promenade and landscapes. (This) includes litter collection, maintenance of grass landscapes, palms and trees.

“We also undertake ad-hoc repairs to beachfront showers as and when it is reported.” She said toilets at the Bay of Plenty beach were being renovated and the city had provided portable toilets along the beachfront. When the Daily News visited these facilities, workmen were busy with construction and the toilets were closed. Mthethwa said the beachfront toilets were managed by the city’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit. The city, she explained, provided attendants in public ablution facilities during all holidays, including the Easter weekend.
