‘No corruption in power station tender’

There was no corruption in the awarding of the tender for the decommissioning of the Athlone Power Station, Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille said on Tuesday. “The city wishes to formally clarify this misconception by stating that the investigation, conducted by an independent and well-known firm of forensic investigators, revealed no evidence of either fraud or corruption relating to the awarding of the Athlone Power Station tender to Aurecon,” De Lille said in a statement. “This applies to the city, its officials and employees, and Aurecon.” De Lille launched an investigation after the African National Congress in the Western Cape levelled allegations in August of corruption. It was concerned about the fairness of awarding the R11 million contract to Aurecon. The Athlone Power Station was commissioned in 1962 and fired by coal. Its two cooling towers were demolished in 2010.
