Malema’s farm up for grabs

Julius Malema’s Schuilkraal farm was set to come under the hammer on Monday. Park Village Auctions was to auction off the R4 million farm outside Polokwane. This is Malema’s second piece of immovable property to be sold off. The former ANC Youth League leader’s incomplete Sandown mansion fetched R5.9m last month. The money went towards settling the R16m that Malema owes Sars. Malema and Norman Tloubatla, the new owner of the house, denied rumours that theirs was an elaborate plan to keep the house within Malema’s reach. The former ANCYL leader’s Mercedes-Benz Viano and other household items were sold off separately. Some of the items were bought by Malema’s cousins and allies.

The Sunday Independent, The Star’s sister newspaper, reported on Sunday that Malema had begged the curator of his estate to stop the auction of his 139-hectare farm, but Richard Masoanganye, the curator, refused. The Asset Forfeiture Unit attached the farm in March because the authorities believe the property had been bought from crime proceeds after a R52m tender had allegedly been awarded illegally to On-Point Engineering. Malema’s Ratanang Family Trust had shares in the company. The farm is registered under Gwama Properties, which is owned by Lesiba Gwangwa, the director of On-Point Engineering. Malema, Gwangwa, another On-Point Engineering director Kagisho Dichabe, and businessman Selbie Manthata, his wife Helen and brother Makgetsi face criminal charges relating to the controversial Limpopo government tender.
