M&R on the road with R2bn deals

Murray & Roberts (M&R) had secured three new contracts worth almost R2 billion last month, the firm said yesterday. The listed construction and engineering group said M&R Cementation had been awarded a contract worth about R1.3bn by Northam Platinum to sink and equip two sets of decline shafts at its Booysensdal North UG2 mine. The scope of work included initial stoping to ramp up production to a steady rate of about 180 000 reef tons a month while an estimated 15km of tunnel development and 310 000m2 of stoping would be done during the estimated 36-month contract period.

M&R’s chief executive, Henry Laas, said the construction firm’s global underground mining operating platform continued to perform well due to strong global demand for commodities and this business was well positioned for continued growth. M&R’s Concor Mining, in a joint-venture with Basil Read, was awarded a contract worth about R722 million by Assmang Iron Ore for mining of iron ore at its Beeshoek open cast mine in the Northern Cape. The contract was commenced at the beginning of this month and it was set for completion in June 2014. The SA National Road Agency awarded a two-year contract worth R143m to Concor Roads & Earthworks for the rehabilitation of the N1 national road on section 8 between Nelspoort and Three Sisters. These contracts were important contract wins for M&R and testament to the quality of its work, Laas said.
