Limpopo official faces graft charges

A senior public works official in Limpopo, his wife, and one other person appeared in court on Wednesday on charges of corruption, fraud, and money laundering, said the Hawks. Godfrey Ramakgalemele Mphahlele, 49, allegedly awarded tenders worth R10 million to a cleaning, catering, and construction company, Leshiretje, owned by his wife Ester Mmakgabo Mogano, Captain Paul Ramaloko said. She is also a procurement officer at the provincial health department. The third accused, Samson Nkadi Mphahlele, 33, is involved in various businesses. The three made their first appearance in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. The case was postponed to August 15. They were each released on bail of R5000.

According to the Hawks, Mphahlele was part of the bid evaluation committee which was tasked with awarding the tenders that went his wife's way. The couple allegedly used their positions to influence the awarding of tenders related to building and renovating schools and clinics. Limpopo Hawks head Maj-Gen Dibero Molatjane praised the officers behind the arrests. “We will continue to use all resources to fight corruption in our province. We also applaud the team for the sterling work.”
