Indiza boss served with arrest warrant

Warrants of arrest have been issued for embattled Indiza Infrastructure Solutions boss, Jabulani Mabaso, and his fraud and corruption co-accused, former education department chief financial officer, Pamela Zulu. Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge Gregory Kruger issued the warrants on Monday after the two failed to turn up at court for the start of their trial. Prosecutor Wendy Greef said Mabaso appeared to be unrepresented by legal council following an application by him to the Assets Forfeiture Unit to have his funds released so he could pay an advocate.

Zulu is represented by advocate Naren Sangham, who was also a no-show at court. Kruger ordered further that Sangham be referred to the provincial law society for his non-appearance. Mabaso and Zulu are charged with fraud, money laundering and corruption. These charges relate to a tender awarded to Indiza by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education for the supply of stationery to schools. The charges arose from a Scorpions police investigation. Mabaso is alleged to have inflated prices and fabricated invoices during a period of two years, defrauding the department of about R200 million. Mabaso is on R1m bail and Zulu on R30 000. The two are expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
