I’ll quit if found guilty, says mayor

Polokwane mayor Freddy Greaver has promised to resign if he is found to have done anything wrong in the awarding of tenders in the province. This comes just days after City Press reported that Greaver and several other business people were part of an alleged mafia that controls and plunders state money through tendering in the province. The report stated that Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale and ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema were godfathers of the alleged mafia. Yesterday Greaver dared anybody to investigate him. “If these companies can provide any evidence that I have any business interests in them, that I assisted them with the intention to solicit a bribe, I Freddy Greaver I… will step down with immediate effect”. Greaver admitted that SGL Engineering, the company linked to Malema, had been doing work in the municipality. He denied any wrongdoing. Last year, SGL Engineering was appointed to consult on a project worth R10 million in the city council. Mathale’s office refused to state if the premier would step down. His spokesman, Phuti Mosomane, said anyone with evidence of corruption should present it to the police. Malema could not be reached for comment. Lesiba Gwangwa, SGL’s director, refused to comment.
