Hawks fight corruption in Limpopo

Seventeen people, including a former senior state accountant and four junior supply chain officials at Limpopo’s health department, are expected to appear in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court, in Limpopo on Friday for fraud and corruption. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said the commercial crimes unit drove from town to town in Limpopo on Thursday, arresting former government officials and their relatives linked to a R13 million fraudulent government tender. It is alleged that in 2006, five government officials colluded to enrich themselves.

Hawks spokesman Hangwani Mulaudzi said they allegedly facilitated transaction transfers into the accounts of their relatives. Mulaudzi said combined, the transactions amounted to R13 million. They are expected to appear on charges of fraud, money laundering and corruption. “Our fight against crime is gaining momentum in dealing with corruption; we went to Parliament and asked what we are doing with corruption in Limpopo,” he said. “This is one of the first and many that are coming we are going to execute in the province and in the country.”
