Gupta paper in lucrative contract

The Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) is spending R3.3 million buying 6 400 copies per day of The New Age newspaper, which is owned by the Gupta family. “Prasa has a subscription agreement with The New Age media company which provides Prasa with 3 200 copies of the newspaper on a daily basis from Monday to Friday,” said Minister of Transport Dikobe Ben Martins in a written reply in Parliament. Martins explained the deal as running from August 13, 2012 to August 12, 2013.

This is for two items: 3 200 copies for each of 256 publishing days at R3.50 a copy including VAT, a total of R2.8672m; plus 3 200 copies per 256 publishing days at 50c a copy including VAT giving a total of R409 600. The two items together total R3.2768m.
