Four held for R10m health fraud

Four people were arrested on Thursday on charges of defrauding the Limpopo health department of more than R10.6 million, police said. They were accused of fraudulently awarding tenders to companies in which they and their close family members had interests, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said. "Three of those arrested were members of a tender committee at a Nursing College in Limpopo," he said. They allegedly obtained and fraudulently used the particulars of other people's companies to inflate prices and ensure tenders were awarded to their companies.

Hawks' spokesman Colonel McIntosh Polela said the arrests followed an investigation that began in February. "A former state accountant who was arrested at his home in Middelburg was considered a prime suspect," he said. Police were expecting to arrest the fifth person soon. A chief provisioning officer, deputy manager, administrative clerk and a deputy manager were among those linked to the case. Two men and two women were arrested. They were expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges of corruption and fraud.
