eThekweni probe to be released

The findings of a forensic probe into alleged fraud in the eThekwini municipality will be revealed on Tuesday, provincial government officials said. “Co-operative governance MEC Nomusa Dube will officially reveal the outcome of the forensic investigation,” her spokesman Lennox Mabaso said on Monday. An auditing firm was appointed early last year to investigate fraud, corruption, and maladministration allegations in eThekwini municipality. The allegations relate to the awarding of tenders. According to Auditor General Terence Nombembe's 2009/10 report R532 million had been spent irregularly in the municipality, which runs the city of Durban.

It failed to comply with supply chain management processes for infrastructure and housing projects. There were also irregularities in the awarding of contracts, payments and performance management of telecommunications. According to the AG's 2010/2011 report, eThekwini’s irregular expenditure rose to R1.3 billion. Mabaso said Dube would on Tuesday first address councillors in a closed meeting before speaking to reporters.
