Durban port gets mobile cranes

Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has ordered six mobile harbour cranes for the Durban port, it said on Thursday. “The cranes are part of TPT's Durban RoRo and Maydon Wharf Terminal's R438.3 million investment in container-handling capacity,” the parastatal said in a statement. TPT signed a contract with Liebherr Werk Nenzing on Thursday to buy the cranes to enhance capacity at the terminal, which had seen a steady increase in container volumes. “The investment in these assets is part of our aggressive drive to improve infrastructure and facilities at all our terminals,” said Karl Socikwa, TPT chief executive.

He said the contract would contribute to the department of public enterprise's supplier development programme. “ 1/8W 3/8e have committed with Liebherr to implement local supplier development initiatives for a period of five years, to ensure that in future South African companies will have the competence and expertise to manufacture component parts as well as fully assembled cranes and other specialised maritime equipment,” Socikwa said. TPT recently took delivery of two new cranes for its Ngqura (Coega) container terminal in the Eastern Cape.

In total, TPT had bought 15 cranes for container-handling throughout its terminals in the last nine months as part of Transnet's accelerated fleet renewal programme. TPT is a division of state-owned freight, logistics and transport company Transnet.
