Department warns against fraudsters

The National Department of Health has urged members of the public, especially companies, to be alert for fraudulent people using the department’s letterhead to conduct business, the department said on Wednesday. Departmental spokesperson Popo Maja said: “It has come to the attention of the National Department of Health (NDOH) that there are certain corrupt companies and individuals who are defrauding unsuspecting businesses in the name of the Department.” Maja said the department was warning members of the public to be alert as the scam “involves the fraudsters using the departmental letterheads to send out fake Tenders to companies and requests to supply equipment and goods”.

However, the contact person’s name and telephone number on the form was not the same as the NDOH in Pretoria and when searching the address of the company on the internet, it did not exist. The banking details were also in a private name and not a company name. Maja said the department had alerted the relevant authorities including the police and the Hawks to investigate in order to protect legitimate businesses as well as the name of the Department.
