Department investigates graft claims

The Transport Department said on Thursday it was investigating allegations it paid R10-million more for a tender than it needed to. “The Department of Transport has noted a report by Corruption Watch in relation to the department's erstwhile Investor Conference,” it said in a statement. It was co-operating with the Public Protector in the matter and had started internal processes. A Corruption Watch probe found alleged irregularities in a R13-million tender awarded by the department, the civil society organisation said earlier on Thursday.

Global Interface Consultancy won a tender to manage conference and communication services for the department's international investor conference in June last year. It had submitted a bid for R13.5-million. The company apparently had not fulfilled all the necessary requirements. Losing bidder Indigo Design and Event Marketing bid R3.8-million. The BEE-accredited company then lodged complaints with the department, the Public Protector and Corruption Watch.
