Bidders will be held to deadline – department

The department of Energy has dismissed concerns that some of the projects chosen in the first bidding window of the renewable energy independent power producers (IPPs) programme faced challenges in meeting the June deadline. The department yesterday announced the names of the 28 preferred bidders chosen in window one of the process in December last year. The projects could provide 1 416 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy, it said. Window one surpassed the targeted 1 000MW that was to be reached by the end of the year. The projects are expected to reach financial close by the beginning of next month.

The department had received requests for amendments from some preferred bidders but would be careful to not allow any changes that could compromise the procurement process. A total of 3 625MW of renewable energy is required to be procured from IPPs by 2016. The department was monitoring these bidders closely with regards to their commitments, it said, adding that it would not hesitate to axe any contract with bidders that failed to meet its commitments undertaken in the bid. “We urge all preferred bidders to stick to their commitments or improve on them,” the department said.
