Aspen, ADCOCK Locals get lion’s share of Aids tender

South Africa had awarded a R5.9 billion contract to supply life-prolonging HIV/Aids medication to 12 international and domestic firms to deal with the country’s biggest health problem, the Department of Health said yesterday. Groups including Aspen Pharmacare, Abbott Laboratories and Adcock Ingram would share the contract. Effective from April next year, the contract aimed at increasing the number of people on treatment by nearly 50 percent, to 2.5 million, the department added.

Nearly 6 million South Africans are infected with HIV – one of the heaviest caseloads in the world. But drug makers are unlikely to rake in big profits from the government award, analysts say, given the stiff competition in the bidding. The department said it had saved R2.2bn on the new contract, which it initially expected would cost R8.1bn. Aspen was awarded 20 percent of the contract while domestic rival Adcock was given 14 percent. Other winners of contracts included Chicago-based Abbott, with 8.1 percent, and domestic firm Cipla Medpro, with 9 percent.
