Another dodgy senior appointee?

President Jacob Zuma’s officials in the criminal justice sector will be shifting nervously as yet another senior deployment – this time of Thulani Dhlomo to the State Security Agency – comes under scrutiny and the list of presidential appointments that have been questioned, challenged or set aside continues to grow. The DA will ask Inspector-General for Intelligence advocate Faith Radebe to investigate how Dhlomo managed to be appointed to head the security agency’s special operations unit – complete with its own, all too familiar secret slush fund – despite being the subject of an ongoing R45 million tender fraud probe.

City Press revealed last week that Dhlomo, who was appointed to the intelligence position earlier this year, resigned from his previous job as head of security at the KwaZulu-Natal department of social development shortly after an internal audit requested by then MEC Meshack Radebe recommended that he face criminal charges. DA MP David Maynier said on Sunday “there is clearly something very wrong” at the State Security Agency as it was “hard to imagine Dhlomo would have received a security clearance, given the corruption allegations”, and equally hard to imagine he would have been appointed without clearance.
