ANC welcomes Corruption Watch

The ANC welcomed the launch of the Cosatu's Corruption Watch initiative on Thursday. “It is our held view that if crime and corruption is not firmly attended to, it has the potential to reverse our hard won democratic gains,” African National Congress spokesman Jackson Mthembu said in a statement. “We call upon Cosatu and all South Africans to blow the whistle against crime and corruption committed in both the public as well as in the private sector. This will ensure that this scourge of crime and corruption is uprooted completely in our society.”

Mthembu said the ANC's national and local election manifestos emphasised that the party would ensure that procurement methods, like the use of tenders, were transparent. “Responding to our call, government has engaged the services of the Special Investigating Unit to ensure that perpetrators of such corrupt acts are brought to book.” Corruption Watch was an initiative that aimed to hold public and private sector officials accountable. The initiative had a website allowing victims of corruption to lodge complaints, which would eventually be made public. Justice Minister Jeff Radebe said at the launch of the initiative in Johannesburg on Thursday that the fight against corruption should be as important as the struggle against apartheid.

“Corruption seeks to extinguish the flame that shines on all South Africans, the flame that promises freedom and security for all, the flame of democracy,” he said. Radebe said government looked forward to the positive contribution the Corruption Watch initiative would bring to the country. Congress of SA Trade Unions general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said corruption had made politics a competition of who had the “biggest treasure chest”. He said divisions and factions within unions, businesses and political parties also provided a perfect cover for corrupt individuals.

“The perfect cover that such factions and divisions provide is that even those caught with their hands in the cookie jar refuse to resign from their post as they enjoy immunity and guaranteed indemnity provided by their factions.”
