Airport stores put out to tender

Six retail spaces in the international departures hall of the Cape Town International Airport will be put out to tender next week, an airport official said on Friday. Spokeswoman Deidre Davids said the hall was a duty-free area that served premium-class travellers who generally spent about two hours waiting for their flight. “During the last financial year, 750,000 passengers were processed through this terminal and during the same period sales of roughly R331 per passenger were generated,” she said. Up for tender was a jewellery store, a books and magazines store, a sunglasses store and two open concept spaces. “The operating hours are flight-dependent and can therefore vary from time to time. During the summer season it is roughly an 18-hour day and in winter a 15-hour one.”

The retail spaces were the first of three phases of airport businesses to be put out for tender. Davids said the cost of the tender documents had been reduced from around R1500 to R200 after input from small to medium business owners. “As a business we are very serious about the role we need to play in supporting small, medium or micro enterprises,” she said. Interested parties needed to attend a management presentation and start their bid preparation early. The tender process would open on Monday.
