Action for tender committee members

With the recent withdrawal of charges against the Nkandla architect, Minenhle Makhanya, members of the tender committee at the Department of Public works are still facing internal disciplinary hearings. Public Service Association’s KwaZulu-Natal manager, Claude Naicker, said the 12 members involved in the scandal would not be affected by the decision to drop the charges. This was because the Makhanya issue was a criminal matter and whatever action was taken against Makhanya would have no impact on their members. This was in contrast to what members of the union were facing, which was a departmental disciplinary issue. The 12 members were charged for not following the proper procedures in awarding the tender.

Naicker said what the PSA wanted was for the disciplinary hearings to begin as soon as possible. This was “hanging like a sword over their heads,” he said. Since the investigation into the Nkandla saga had begun, the officials had been highly stressed. One had to seek psychological help for the stress, while others had to see doctors for stress-related complications. “They are continuing with their work and were not suspended,” Naicker said. The members are accused of flouting the tender processes during the allocation of the tender for President Zuma’s Nkandla homestead. The Daily News earlier reported that the 12 were hauled before the disciplinary hearing after a report by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) found they had made decisions that led to the department spending unreasonable amounts of money to upgrade Zuma’s private home. The SIU, however, reportedly found no evidence to indicate that the employees received any benefits from the service providers.
